1. What inspired you to be a teacher?

In my junior year of high school, I applied to work at an after-school program in my hometown. This job opened the door for me as it gave me hands-on experience in the classroom and in the gym. Once the after-school program transitioned to summer school, I spent two summers running the physical education portion of the school. In college, I spent two years working as an enrichment coordinator at an after-school program in Cedar Rapids called Kids on Course. These experiences never felt like a job for me. My teaching experience before even becoming a licensed teacher is what inspired me to be a teacher.

2. What legacy do you hope to leave as an educator?

As an educator, I hope to leave a legacy of inspiring students to live healthy, active, and confident lives. I'd hope my students won't remember my class as an environment where they just got to play games, but as a place where they developed lifelong habits. A place where they could have fun, be comfortable with who they were, and a place where they felt included. I'd want to be remembered as someone who built meaningful relationships, practiced what I preached, and always taught with a positive attitude.

3. What actions and mindset will be needed during the unique setting of the 2025 school year?
In 2025, I believe I will need to have an approach of flexibility and inclusiveness. I believe technology has changed the motor function of children in today's society. Kids are spending less time outside and more time in front of a screen. Creating an environment where students can develop a passion for physical activity will be a goal of mine. Being adaptive and inclusive will be actions I will need to take as well.
